Masseria Petrarolo is set among hectares of olive groves and looks out onto the Adriatic Sea beyond. The fortified farmhouse dates back to 1689 and was originally built to protect its residents from pirates and the Saracens, only accessible by a drawbridge.
Recently it has undergone complete restoration with stunning results. The original features were meticulously restored and enhanced with some modern amenities. While celebrated interior designer Alexander Waterworth was leading the team, most of the craftsmen were skilled locals. Antique furniture and some modern day pieces have been carefully selected and were sourced within Italy and in other parts of Europe. Attention to detail has been paid to every single element.
The Masseria now offers 8 ensuite bedrooms, 6 in the main building of the Masseria and 2 in the Pool House. All of them are individually furnished but kept in the theme of soothing pastel colours, rustic simplicity and elegant refinement. Most of them have direct garden access, sea views and free-standing baths.
In case more than 16 guests are expected, the 1974 Airstream Overlander offers idyllic accommodation for a further two guests. It has been renovated over a time period of 4 years and is now equipped with a double bedroom, wetroom with toilet and shower, a living room and kitchenette. In the main building the room provisioned for the chef, which is decorated in the same style and to equally high standards, can sleep 2 more guests and is used as an overflow room. Meals are either served on the breakfast terrace, attached to the main building or on the terrace next to the pool. For atmospheric dining experiences inside, the wonderful “Trajan Room” with its impressive 7 meter long table provides the perfect setting. Attached to it a comfortable living room with sofas and a fireplace invites for more relaxation. This is where the former stables were located and the cattle troughs are still a distinct feature.
Equally extraordinary are the Masseria’s outside spaces, like the rooftop pool and the adjoining lounge and dining area with breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding countryside and the sparkling sea at the horizon. The main pool in the garden is enormous and replicates the beach and the sea, while blending in perfectly well with its surroundings. Below lush, terraced gardens with herbs and vegetables provide parts of the menu, prepared by the private chef who is a master in Apulian cooking. A walled garden with variety of lemon and orange trees fill the air with beautiful scents.
For anyone dreaming of an intimate wedding in an extraordinary setting, Masseria Petrarolo has its own chapel and weddings can be arranged on the grounds. The courtyard with its antique chianche (stone slabs) flooring seems like the ideal place for an Apulian wedding feast under the starlit summer sky.
Other pastimes which can be enjoyed are wine tastings in front of the wine cellar, the hammam or an in- or outdoor cinema night.
Throughout their stay guests are looked after by a small team of housekeepers and many extra services can be arranged upon request.
The nearby port town of Monopoli is an enchanting place with lovely restaurants, markets and picture perfect sandy coves.
Masseria Petrarolo is an Apulian dream which will endlessly linger in the fondest memories of its visitors.
"Our experience was better than we could have ever imagined.
All of our guests are homesick for the Masseria—maybe us most of all! We look forward to coming back some day.
Between the place, the food, and the people, we had all the makings for a good stay—but everything was above and beyond, making it a great stay.
The best week of our lives!
Thank you for helping us organize this most wonderful experience. We will never forget the wonderful week we had.
(Bayley & Nick, U.S.A., May 2024)"Wir hatten eine wunderschöne Zeit in der Masseria Petrarolo.

“Thank you for arranging our accommodation and wedding at Masseria Petrarolo!
The Masseria really defines understated luxury and was far nicer than many 5* hotels we have stayed in around the world. I could not fault a single thing.
The manager, the chef, indeed all the staff went out of their way to do everything they could to make our week so special, we will never forget it.
I wish I could have every holiday there!
Booking everything through yourself really gave us confidence in the process – booking anything in Italy can sometimes be a daunting experience.
We plan to return to Puglia next summer and will be sure to use Cielo di Puglia to find us another Masseria to try out!”

(L.D., Germany, May 2017)“We had the unique experience of renting the Masseria Petrarolo for a week right after Easter this year. It was the first time our entire family got together for an whole week and we could not have chosen a better setting.
From the moment we arrived we felt right at home, from the greeting of the staff (11 strong) to the kindness of Allison (the general manager) to the opulence of the setting. The 8/9 bedroom Masseria incredibly detailed oriented, with impeccable taste in its furnishings and details made the stay extremely enjoyable.
As I tell my wife, “be careful, online pictures show a location at its best, shot by the best photographer, in the best light, with the most picturesque angle on the perfect day”, well amazingly so, the Masseria was even better than the pictures represented, from the discovery of an Hammam, to the surprise of a tennis court to the detail of a jumping net for the kids, to fully stocked kitchens and refrigerators throughout the property, how about two pools (one heated) for everyone to enjoy.
Where else will you be served three fantastic meals with home grown vegetables and fruits, fresh baked cakes in the morning, and sumptuous meals in the evening accompanied by local underrated delicious wines? Did I mention the staff, always attentive to your food desires and basically cooking from dawn to dusk. We specified right away that we wanted to eat only local fares; Puglia has a basically unlimited array of choices from fish, to meats to vegetables and obviously pastas.
How about one lunch that we were surprised by wood burning oven pizzas, to end the meal with a Nutella pizza!
Just to make sure the three “little” kids gave us a break at dinner time; Allison organized a baby sitter, Angela (which was actually part of the staff during the day).
The kids wanted to bring her home.
I have to thank my wife, who found and organized the whole week. The whole family will certainly try to get back to the Masseria soon.”
